What goes on behind the site
RagnaPlace does not fit on a single machine: there are two servers running 24 hours a day. The main one is dedicated, with a 6-core Xeon, 32 GB of RAM and an SSD, and it holds the database, the cache, the API and the site. The second one, with 4 vCPUs and 16 GB of RAM, handles search, the extractor that opens the game client files and the character and map renderer. On top of that there is the storage for every sprite, map and illustration. That is over 170 tables, millions of records, 16 languages and an image of pretty much everything in the game, all reprocessed every time a new patch drops. You can imagine the bill is not small: this needs real CPU, RAM and disk. And there is more than one game server to keep up with: kRO, laRO, jRO and several others, each with its own items, names and official translations. The crawlers run on their own, hunting down new patches and updating everything. Besides the site, there is also a free public API, for anyone who wants to use the data in a bot, a spreadsheet, a calculator or whatever else comes to mind. Since 2012 it has been just me here. Code, database, design, patch crawlers, translation, moderation, servers — all in my spare time, with no company and no team behind it. What keeps me going is seeing the site being useful to people. Ads only pay for a very small slice of this, and they are exactly what gets in the way of your reading. The more people who support directly, the less the site has to rely on them.
