Oftentimes an orphan after Satan Morroc's revival separated many children from their parents, the Thief is hardened though their crude tutelage in fighting and stealing to survive in the backstreets of their decimated hometown. Having to learn the art of deceit and stealth just to get by, they realized these skills also help them in the battlefield. Growing up among the ruins of the desert town of Morroc and the surrounding Sograt Desert, having witnessed firsthand the Destruction of Morroc, they have sworn to learn the shadow arts to always protect what they care about by any means possible... even if those means are morally questionable.
Thieves excel in having high FLEE thanks to Improve Dodge and deal lots of quick damage through their Double Attack with their trusty Dagger, both benefitting from a high AGI stat. They can also hide from monsters with Hiding and then Steal loot from these monsters, enabling them to acquire more Zeny than other classes early on.
Job Changing
editOnce you are a Job Level 10 Novice, you have 2 methods of changing into a Thief:
- Go to the Thief Guild found inside the Pyramid northwest of Morroc . Once inside, traverse the maze and go to the middle of the map at to enter the secret guildhall. Afterwards, follow the hallway down and take the left door at . Talk to the Thief Guide behind the desk who changes your job to Thief and rewards you with a
Novice Main Gauche [3].
- Pursuing this method also unlocks the Back Slide, Find Stone, Stone Fling, and Sand Attack Skills for free right as you change.
- Alternatively, go to the Thief Classroom on the 2nd Floor of Criatura Academy and speak to Guest Lecturer Mayssel located at to undergo some tests before becoming a Thief. She will warn you that you will not receive the bonus Job Skills listed above if you use this method and thus it is not recommended.
Builds
editI. Envenom & Auto-Attack / Dagger Thief
edita. GAMEPLAY:
This build focuses on poisoning your target with Envenom to weaken them while avoiding getting hit by monsters using Improve Dodge and Hiding. Then, taking advantage of Double Attack by having high AGI for increased ASPD, auto-attack weakened monsters one-by-one until they are killed. Unfortunately, the Thief does not have any AOE skills to level with so this is the only option for a new player and it is recommended to focus on passive monsters when starting out.
- Alternative gameplay: Due to lack of AOE skills for this class, it it recommended to get any slotted Accessory carded with a
Marine Sphere Card to use Magnum Break on mobs of monsters to level. However, this will not be an option for a brand new player obviously.
b. STATS:
You may allocate certain status points depending on the monster you are killing, your survivability, skill playing the game, and planned character build later on. Primary stats will be STR for ATK and AGI for ASPD & FLEE, but if you find yourself missing monsters, add more DEX to give you HIT and improve your Steal rate.
Base level 40 base status distribution suggestion:
- STR: 20
- AGI: 52
- VIT: 1
- INT: 1
- DEX: 20
- LUK: 1
II. Auto-Attack / Bow Thief
edita. GAMEPLAY:
This is a very niche build that focuses on the ability for the Thief Class to use Bow-type weapons, like the Archer, but with none of the Skill benefits they get. Using a Bow gives a slight attack range improvement (5 cells away) so the goal would be to auto-attack your targets with your increased ASPD, one-by-one, and hope to kill them before they reach you, using Improve Dodge and Hiding to avoid getting hit by monsters when they do. There are no AOE skills available to use for this build so leveling will be slower and it is recommended to focus on passive monsters when starting out.
Two benefits to this build are having more DEX for a higher success on Steal rates and the ability to use various kinds of arrows, including those imbued with different elements (like Fire, Wind, or Holy) that deal even more damage to monsters based on their element's weakness.
- Alternative gameplay: Although Double Attack does not work with Bow-type weapons from the base skill, if you can afford equipment or cards that grants Double Attack then it will apply to any weapon you are using at the level your Thief has learned. That means that using a
Sidewinder Card (which only grants Lv.1) on your Thief with Lv.10 learned, your Bow will Double Attack with the rates/bonuses of Lv.10! The most common ways to achieve this are:
b. STATS:
You may allocate certain status points depending on the monster you are killing, your survivability, skill playing the game, and planned character build later on. Primary stats will be DEX for ATK & HIT and AGI for ASPD & FLEE.
Base level 40 base status distribution suggestion:
- STR: 1
- AGI: 43
- VIT: 1
- INT: 1
- DEX: 43
- LUK: 1
Tips & Tactics
editGeneral Leveling Strategy
editBelow are three steps to efficiently level a new character:
- Get gear and experience for your new character by following this Izlude tutorial guide from the forums (this guide is also listed down below in the Thief equipment section with additional details).
- Using
Catherina Von Blood [1], you can level as soon as base level 3-56 in Sunken Ship. Talk to Fisk and pay 250z to go to the . As a thief, you may use
Marine Sphere Card to use Magnum Break since you do not have an AoE skill. - Without using
Catherina Von Blood [1], using the Geffen Bounty Board Quests kill Roda Frogs until level 21(they drop sticky webfeet that you can sell to players or turn in for the level 56-71 Eden Group Leveling Quests) , then using the Payon Bounty Board Quests kill Bigfoots until level 41. Then, using the Eden Group Leveling Quests and Geffen Bounty Board Quests, kill Orc Warriors, Orc Ladies, and Orc Babies until level 60.
You can accept multiple quests at one time, however when turning in do note that you cannot gain more than 1 full level from a single quest, so do try to turn the quests in when you have a low exp percentage or after you've job changed if you're job level 49.
Making More Zeny
editBy using Steal, extra loot can be obtained from monsters before fighting them, which helps with earning more Zeny when just starting out. You can even sometimes steal rare items this way, but note it will require a higher DEX stat than the usual recommended builds to increase its success rate.
Other Suggestions
edit- Your next class is either an Assassin or a Rogue; you may have to adjust your build accordingly.
- Use Eden Group Leveling Quests and Bounty Board Quests to find monsters to kill around your level.
- Use Stat Reset to reset your stats to maximize your damage.
- Use Skill Reset to rest your skills to maximize your damage.
- Use Elemental Converters to increase your damage by changing your weapons element that is strong against the monster's element.
- Use ASPD Potions to greatly increase your killing speed at lower levels.
- Useful recovery items. (If using Meat/Fresh Fish, it is advised to RODex it to yourself in smaller portions to keep within your weight limit)
- Useful AGI or ATK cards:
- Useful HP cards:
- Useful Utility cards:
- May use any of the following gear based on your budget:

Equipment
editI. Enchanter Mounds Quest
editAfter creating a Novice character, follow the section of this Izlude tutorial guide titled "Enchanter Mounds Quest" which involves NPC Enchanter Mounds in Izlude at . This quest will allow you to enchant the
Cotton Shirt that you get the moment you created your Novice character with the enchantments Max HP+100 and Max SP+50, provided that you complete the step that requires you to speak with NPC Enchanter Almond J in Izlude at . This cotton shirt proves itself useful once you change your class and can no longer equip most of the novice gear provided to you when you register at the academy. It is recommended to card this cotton shirt with cards that increase HP and/or SP such as
Decorated Evil Tree Card or
Pupa Card.
After providing Enchanter Mounds in Izlude at with a review of the service they provided during the enchanting quest, you can talk to Enchanter Almond J in Izlude at to enchant the novice weapon you receive after you change your class from Novice to Thief. The two enchantments provided are random and if you aren’t happy with the result you can enchant it again endlessly. You will likely use this enchanted weapon until you can do the level 26 Eden Group Equipments Quests which is the first part of that questline which rewards a weapon. Keep in mind Enchanter Almond J won’t enchant the Novice Main Gauche that you get for registering at the academy despite it being a novice weapon.
