Basics

edit

In Ragnarok Online, a character's Class (also known as their Job) is what defines their abilities and skills and shapes what playstyles are available to them. Once you pick a Class for a character you cannot switch to a different Class, and once you pick that character's second class you are locked to that second Class's evolution path forever.

  • Doram characters only have access to the Summoner Class line and cannot change it, but Human characters start out as a Novice and can then progress down a Class tree of their choosing as they level.

Human Classes can be divided into two broad types: Primary and Expanded. Primary Classes are the ones that were introduced at the game's inception and whose progression most of the game is built around, whereas Expanded Classes have been added over time and are more limited; having lower maximum levels, less complex progression trees, specialized playstyles, niche applications, etc.

Except where otherwise specified, the rest of this article will be about Human characters.

Class Progression

edit

Characters in Ragnarok Online (including Doram) have two types of Levels: their Base Level and their Job Level. While the former tracks the overall power level of the character by grants Stat and Talent Points to distribute, the latter tracks how far along a character is in the mastery of their Class and gives Skill Points to unlock new skill. Both defeated monsters and most quests give both Base and Job Level Experience.

For Primary Classes, Base Levels will max at 99 until they Rebirth into a Transcended version of their Job. They will then revert to Base Level 1 and work back up to 99 again. From there, that Class can upgrade to a 3rd Class and can progress to 100+. At Base Level 200, that Class can then upgrade to a 4th Class and progress to 200+, currently maxing at Base Level 260.

Job Levels start at 1, including each time you upgrade to the next job, and have a class-specific cap. Each additional level gives you one extra Skill Point which can be spent to learn a new Skill or develop one that has already been learned. Additionally, all Classes get extra bonuses to their most relevant Stats at specific Job Levels (for example, Mages have an extra +1 INT at Job Level 2, +2 at Job Level 14 and so on, up to Job Level 50, when they get +8 INT total).

Progression for Human characters goes as follows:

  • You start out as a Novice on character creation and begin in Izlude (after a short intro quest).
    • Once you reach Job Level 10 and allocate all 9 Skill Points into the Basic Skill, you will be able to Job Change into a First Class, Primary or Expanded, which will reset your Job Level to 1.
    • In order to change to a First Class, you will need to meet with the Job Change NPC at your respective Class Guild or change in the Criatura Academy Classroom of your Job; the pages of each First Class explain how to change to them.
    • A Super Novice will additionally require you to reach Base Level 45 before you can change into them.
  • If you chose one of the Primary Classes (or TaeKwon Kid):
    • Once you are Job Level 50, you will be able to select one of two Second Classes to upgrade to (for example, a Mage can become either a Wizard or Sage).
    • After changing Jobs, your Job Level will be reset to 1, and you will be able to start levelling it again, up to a maximum of 50 (or 70 if Transcended).
    • If you are one of the Primary Classes you will be able to Transcend (see Rebirth for more details on how that works) at level 99/50. This will turn you into a level 1/1 High Novice, with higher stats than a regular Novice. Then, at Job Level 10 you change into your High First Class.
      • Taekwon Kids will not go through this process. Instead they can directly become their 3rd Job once they hit 99/50 as their 2nd Job: Taekwon Master.
    • Finally, once Job Level 50 again, you will be able to change into a Transcendent Second Class after you Rebirth.
    • Once you are a Transcendent Primary Second Class, you will be able to change into your Third Class at level 99/70.
    • As a Third Class, you will be able to pass Base Level 100 to eventually change into your Fourth Class at level 200/70.
    • As a Fourth Class, you will be able pass Base Level 200 to eventually reach the Level Cap of 260/55.
  • If you chose an Expanded Class (other than Super Novice):
    • Once you are level 99/70, you will be able to advance to your Second Expanded Class.
    • As a Second Expanded Class, you will be able to change into your Third Expanded Class at level 200/70.
    • As a Third Expanded Class, you will be able to level until the Level Cap of 260/55.
  • If you chose Super Novice as your Expanded Class:
    • Your maximum Base Level and Job Level are both 99.
    • Once you reach them, you will be able to take the Job Expansion Quest to become an Expanded Super Novice, which will reset your Job Level to 1 (without resetting your allocated Skill Points) but retain your Base Level. After that, your level caps will be raised to 200/70 and you will have access to extra Skills, but your class will still be referred to as "Super Novice" by the game.
    • At level 200/70, you will be able to change into a Hyper Novice, which has its own special Skills that no other class does with a Level Cap of 260/55.

Progression for a Doram character is more linear:

  • You start out as a Summoner upon character creation and begin in Lasagna rather than Izlude.
  • Once you hit Base Level 100, you become an Advanced Summoner with zero fanfare or quest and your class will still be referred to as "Summoner" by the game. This unlocks the skills at the bottom of the Skill Tree that were unobtainable before this Level.
  • Your maximum Base and Job Levels are 200/70 and, when you reach them, you will be able to change into the Spirit Handler class.
  • A Spirit Handler can level to the Level Cap of 260/55 like a Primary 4th Class character.

No matter which path you choose, the maximum levels you can reach along your selected progression path are 260/55, after which there are no further classes to change into at this time.

Class evolution follows the chart at the top of the page. The only points at which you make choices are when selecting your First and Second Classes (where available); all further possible classes follow from those previous choices.

For the Classes marked with an asterisk (*) in the table, you cannot choose which of them you end up as and they depend on your character's gender selected at creation.

Job Change Quest Skip

edit

If you would like to skip the Job Change Quests for the Human Primary 2nd Classes and beyond, you can avoid this process by finding a special 'Valkyrie's Whisper' NPC near the job's main job change NPC (see this update for more details). This process costs 6909.png Nyangvine as a fee but lets you bypass all prerequisites and tasks instantly, though you will miss out on the free quest rewards like Class-specific Headgears and bonus Accessories, etc.

  • Skipping 2nd or 3rd Class Job Change Quests requires 25 6909.png Nyangvine.
  • Skipping 4th Class Job Change Quests requires 100 6909.png Nyangvine.
    • Only for the 4th Job Skip, remember to talk to the Valkyrie NPC before the regular job change NPC to avoid starting the quest (but this needs to be confirmed if it is still the case after the December 2025 update to the 2nd & 3rd Job Skips).

Note that if the Job Change NPC for your class is located in an area of an Episode that needs to be unlocked, you will still need to complete those questlines to be able to access the Whisper. To bypass this, you can ask for someone to teleport you to the closest available map or purchase and use the Episode Clear Ticket service in Prontera Castle.

How to Skip

edit

The example shown below is with the Elemental Master job change NPC, but the process is same for all classes that can be skipped:

  • Make sure you have allocated all of the remaining job skill points on your character before starting 4th Job Change Quest Skip.
  • Each 2nd/3rd/4th Job Change Quest NPC will have a Valkyrie's/Valkyrja's Whisper NPC nearby for you to do the Job quest skip. The Whisper NPC looks like a red Horong (see image in section below).
  • DO NOT TALK TO THE 4TH JOB CHANGE NPC before the Whisper or else you won't be able to skip the job quest and will have to proceed with it as normal. This does not apply to 2nd and 3rd Job Change skips.
    • The NPC will have this "Job Quest" marker over them if you have not yet started it: Fourth Class Job Change NPC

Here is a step-by-step guide to skip the Elemental Master 4th Job Change Quest as an example of the process:

  • Step 1: Talk to the Valkyrie/Valkyrja's Whisper next to the JOB CHANGE NPC and choose the first option "Yes, ma'am!" when it asks whether you believe in it.
Valkyrja's Whisper
  • Step 2: Talk to the newly spawned Valkyrie/Valkyrja, she will inform you that the skip will cost you 100 6909.png Nyangvine and that you wont get any of the job change rewards, (e.g. 490087.png Hourglass Necklace).
Valkyrja
  • Step 3: Choose the second option "Yes, let's do it! Let's break the wall!" and she'll change you into your respective fourth job!
