Becoming a Super Novice means finding power in flexibility and the common spirit, embracing limitations to become capable individuals, and seeking "exemplary mediocrity" as they strive for a balanced skill set rather than mastering just one. In the world of Rune-Midgarts, there is none more adaptable and unique than the Super Novice and it is said that their "Common Soul" is protected by a Guardian Angel that is always watching over them on the battlefield.

This is a special kind of Class which exploits nearly every First Class Skill in the game; whether offensive or supportive, physical or magical, the Super Novice can learn and utilize it. This makes them the most versatile among all Classes, having "true freedom" in build and skills. The downside to this freedom of skills is very low HP and SP, just like a regular Novice. Super Novices also lose the use of the Play Dead skill so must use caution when in combat earlier on.

Super Novices can only equip anything a normal Novice would be able to, including specialized Novice-only equipment, or anything that allows "All Jobs" to wear. Super Novices also have a maximum Job Level of 99 rather than 50 or 70 like other Classes. Additionally, Super Novices also get access to renting their own unique Pushcart, should they choose to get one, much like the Merchant Class. However, to rent a Super Novice Cart, they must visit the shady Kafra Employee behind the Kafra Headquarters in the northwest corner of Al De Baran rather than the normal method.

With so many options to choose from, where will this path of endless possibilities lead?

NOTE: This class is not recommended for new players as it is difficult/expensive to play effectively. The amount of Skills can be overwhelming to those new to the game and Super Novices are much more fragile than other classes despite their flexibility. Additionally, the Job Change Quests can be tedious to complete making the game feel more like a chore then it should.

About Expanded Super Novices

edit

See Expanded Super Novice if you are looking for information on the next Job of the Super Novice Class.

Once a Super Novice hits Base Level 99 and Job Level 99, they can expand their skillset by becoming an Expanded Super Novice, similar to how a First Class Job would become a Second Class Job but with no changes to their Sprite or Class Name. They will need to go through a tedious Job Change Quest to unlock these new abilities, however.

Physical Builds

edit

I. Magnum Break

edit

Recommended stats by Base Level 99:

  • STR: 90
  • AGI: 1
  • VIT: 90
  • INT: 10
  • DEX: 50
  • LUK: 1

This leveling build will play almost identically to the Swordman's Magnum Break Build, with Magnum Break and all of the Swordman's other Active/Passive Skills being the primary focus. What makes this better, however, is the added bonus of supportive magic to buff yourself in combat with Acolyte skills like Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Angelus (especially nice for this build) and even the Archer's Improve Concentration. You can even sneak in the Thief's Envenom here and there to weaken any enemies you fight one-on-one or avoid them with Hiding.

A Super Novice will also be able to get several utility Skills/Spells for quality of life: Teleport, Warp Portal, Pushcart, and Enlarge Weight Limit to note a few. With such a large repertoire of options, it might be wise to consider Increase SP Recovery to make up for any lack of SP they might suffer from.

Physical Super Novices get the standard STR for damage, then VIT for survivability (even if they are still squishy overall), and the rest into DEX. Due to the varying SP cost of all the available skills, some INT is often recommended.

Primary Skills: Magnum Break, Bash, Envenom, Endure

Complementary Skills: Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Angelus, Improve Concentration

II. Auto-Attack

edit

Recommended stats by Base Level 99:

  • STR: 90
  • AGI: 90
  • VIT: 1
  • INT: 10
  • DEX: 50
  • LUK: 1

This leveling build will play almost identically to the Thief's Auto-Attack Build, with Double Attack and Improve Dodge being the core skills to defeat monsters one-by-one quickly and taking as little damage as possible, utilizing Envenom or Bash for extra firepower when needed. What makes this better, however, is the added bonus of Magnum Break for clearing monsters that mob you and supportive magic to buff yourself in combat with Acolyte skills like Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Angelus and even the Archer's Improve Concentration (especially nice for this build).

Physical Super Novices get the standard STR for damage, then AGI for increased ASPD and FLEE, and the rest into DEX. Due to the varying SP cost of all the available skills, some INT is often recommended.

Primary Skills: Double Attack, Improve Dodge, Envenom, Bash

Complementary Skills: Magnum Break, Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Improve Concentration

Magical Builds

edit

I. Fire Bolt / Fire Ball / Fire Wall

edit

Recommended stats by Base Level 99:

  • STR: 1
  • AGI: 1
  • VIT: 50
  • INT: 90
  • DEX: 90
  • LUK: 1

This leveling build will play almost identically to the Mage's Fire Magic Build, with Firebolt, Fireball, and Fire Wall being the core skills to defeat and protect yourself from monsters with. What makes this better, however, is the added bonus of supportive magic to buff yourself in combat with Acolyte skills like Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Angelus and even the Archer's Improve Concentration (especially nice for this build).

You also have a lot more Skill Points than a Mage, so you could also take all of the offensive magic spells to cover all elements if you were so inclined.

A Super Novice will also be able to get several utility Skills/Spells for quality of life: Teleport, Warp Portal, Pushcart, and Enlarge Weight Limit to note a few. With such a large repertoire of options, you could also consider defensive options like Endure or Improve Dodge as well.

Magical Super Novices get the standard INT for MATK and SP, then DEX for reducing Variable Cast Time, followed by VIT for survivability.

Primary Skills: Firebolt, Fireball, Fire Wall

Complementary Skills: Stone Curse, Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Improve Concentration

II. Frost Driver / Lightning Bolt

edit

Recommended stats by Base Level 99:

  • STR: 1
  • AGI: 1
  • VIT: 50
  • INT: 90
  • DEX: 90
  • LUK: 1

This leveling build will play almost identically to the Mage's Wind & Water Magic Build, with Frost Driver and Lightning Bolt being the core skills to defeat and protect yourself from monsters with. Thunder Storm and Safety Wall may be more viable to grab though, due to the much higher number of Skill Points a Super Novice gets.

Primary Skills: Frost Driver, Lightning Bolt, Thunder Storm, Safety Wall

Complementary Skills: Heal, Blessing, Increase Agi, Improve Concentration

Tips & Tactics

edit

General Leveling Strategy

edit

Below are three suggestions to efficiently level a new character:

  1. First, get gear and experience for your new character by following this Izlude tutorial guide from the forums (this guide is also listed down below in the Archer equipment section with additional details). Note that you do not need to complete all of these quests, and simply joining the Academy and getting some gear may be all that you need to start. Using the Job Classrooms on the 2nd Floor to more easily reach your Job Change NPC is helpful as well.
  2. Using 19163.png Catherina Von Blood [1], you can level as soon as base level 3-56 in Sunken Ship. Talk to Fisk (alberta 189/151)alberta.png and pay 250z to go to the Sunken Shipalb2trea.png. As an archer, you will be using Arrow Shower.
  3. Without using 19163.png Catherina Von Blood [1], using the Geffen Bounty Board Quests kill Roda Frogs until level 21(they drop sticky webfeet that you can sell to players or turn in for the level 56-71 Eden Group Leveling Quests) , then using the Payon Bounty Board Quests kill Bigfoots until level 41. Then, using the Eden Group Leveling Quests and Geffen Bounty Board Quests, kill Orc Warriors, Orc Ladies, and Orc Babies until level 60.
You can accept multiple quests at one time, however when turning in do note that you cannot gain more than 1 full level from a single quest, so do try to turn the quests in when you have a low exp percentage or after you've job changed if you're job level 49.

Super Novice Secrets

edit

Being a Super Novice has its benefits as well as disadvantages, and this class remains to be explored by many adventurers. Here are some of the secrets of Super Novicehood:

Doridori
Using the command /doridori restores HP/SP two times faster. You need to shake your head approximately 6 times in a 1.5 ~ 3s time period. A Super Novice insists that head-shaking supposedly speeds up his SP recovery. This only applies to HP and SP recovered by the skills Increase HP Recovery & Increase SP Recovery (Despite the description on the iRO website, this only affects SP recovery, not HP recovery at all)
Guardian Angel
A Super Novice has its own Level Up Angel. When leveling-up, this Guardian Angel is different from those of the other classes. The Angel will cast all skills from the following list on the Super Novice:
Never give up!
According to hearsay, when a Super Novice's HP reaches 0 when he she is 99.0%-99.9%, their Guardian Angel may appear to refill his HP and cast Mental Strength on the Super Novice. This will not occur again until you relog or get another level.
Undying Love
A Super Novice wife will give +1 for every stat when she uses the marriage skill Undying Love on her husband. Also, the husband's SP recovery will double. However, the wife's stats will all be reduced by 1. This however only occurs randomly and temporarily.
The Power of Love
A Super Novice wife will Heal her husband for 2x the normal amount.
Really Super Super Novice
If a Super Novice can manage to avoid even a single death until Job 70 and onwards, he/she will get +10 for all stats. If the Super Novice dies anytime afterwards, that bonus will be lost. This death record can be cleared (and the bonus stats recovered) using Super Novice Spirit.
Super Novice's Cart
Super Novices get their own special cart for an extra fee (1900z) in Al De Baran behind the Kafra Headquarters in the Northwestern corner of the map (aldebaran 54/238)aldebaran.png.
A Novice's Fury
A strange phenomenon when the Super Novice's experience reaches increments of 10% such as, at 10.0%, 20.0% - 80.0%, 90.0%. During these times, the Super Novice has been rumored to summon his Guardian Angel for help. If you change maps or relog, you have to repeat all the steps but otherwise you can just repeat the last 3 lines to get Fury status again. Type 7 lines of text (or you will be silenced) and then type the following phrase to get the Fury Status (CRIT +50):
  • Dear angel, can you hear my voice?
  • I am (your name) SuperNovice~
  • Help me out~ Please~ T_T
  • &
- OR -
  • Guardian Angel, can you hear my voice? ^^;
  • My name is (your name), and I'm a Super Novice~
  • Please help me~ T.T
  • &
& is random text. Sometimes you don't have write one more line after "Help me out" to make the effect activate.
Life After Level 99
Upon reaching Base Level 99, a Super Novice has a few new tricks up its sleeves:
  • At the moment of reaching Base Level 99, a Super Novice gains +2000 Max HP permanently. This bonus is affected by cards, but not by VIT.
  • The two Super Novice Secrets which depend on your current % of Base EXP can still be used, but you must continue leveling to gain the EXP required.
    • To Fury, you must gain n × 10.0x million EXP (where n = 1,2,3,...).
    • In order to use Mental Strength you must gain an additional 99 million EXP or more after reaching the level cap (99 for Super Novice and 200 for Expanded Super Novices).
    • Upon attaining 99,999,999 EXP (as shown on the character Select screen), you will be able to use both the novice chant Fury and Mental Strength upon 0 HP.
    • In order to go beyond Level 99, you have to complete a Quest.

Affordable HP Recovery

edit

When mobbing or tanking groups of monsters, especially for AOE leveling, Healing Items WILL need to be consumed and often even spammed.

Two popular and cheap healing items are Nepeta Cataria and Fresh Fish due to their cheap cost and low weight:

  • 11602.png Nepeta Cataria can be purchased from Cat Paw Shrimp Merchant in Izlude (izlude 117/165)izlude.png or Prontera (prontera 137/223)prontera.png (or in Lasagna (lasagna 166/117)lasagna.png if starting as a Doram) for only 15z each (11z with max Discount).
  • 579.png Fresh Fish can be purchased from Cooking Merchant (payon 167/134)payon.png in Payon or Chef's Assistant (alberta 167/134)alberta.png at the docks of Alberta, as well as other cities, for only 250z each (190z with max Discount).

For a list of Healing Items, a comparison, and a list of a couple popular Healing Items, please see the main article: Healing Items.

Stat Descriptions

edit

It is vital that you understand how each status affects your character to play the game well. Below is a summary but go to the Primary Stats page for detailed information.

Melee Weapons - (Axes, Books, Daggers, Katars, Knuckles, Maces, and Spears)
Ranged Weapons - (Bows, Guns, Instruments, and Whips)

Equipment

edit

Unlike other classes, the Super Novice has a few pieces of equipment that are exclusive to Novices. The Angel Set is considered a Super Novice standard. They're all dropped by Mini-Boss Protocol monsters, and give fairly good stats. The Novice Card Set provides a good amount of Max HP and Max SP, especially at low levels. And the commonly known as the Light Gear, are able to be NPC purchased in Lighthalzen, except for the Novice Breastplate (Bought in Juno). Notably, they are cheap, they give more elemental reduction and are some of the few NPC equipments with slots. However, they aren't a true set, so the gear may be swapped out. Eden Group Equipments Quests are quite good for Super Novices because of the enhance Max HP and Max SP they provide.

Recommended cards:

Agav, Apocalipse, Baby Desert Wolf, Banshee Master, Entweihen Crothen, Gloom Under Night, Orc Lord, Picky, Picky Egg, Porcellio, Pupa, Remover, Rocker, Roda Frog, Succubus, Tao Gunka, Yellow Novus and some Elemental Armor Cards for damage reduction.

Weapon

edit

Due the Renewal, the attack speed of some weapons were adjusted, Maces and One Handed Axes usually are as better than Daggers and One Handed Swords, they have a greater DPS, especially to use Mammonite, and to use with Fury or to use with Chick Hat / Sidewinder Card / Snake Head.

Weapon Description
1208.png Main Gauche [4]
1217.png Stiletto [3]
1508.png Smasher [3]
1309.png Orcish Axe [4]
Main Gauche and Stiletto don't need Chick Hat / Sidewinder Card / Snake Head to use Double Attack. Good weapons to use with cards, the slots can be used with Race, Element or Size increase damage cards, can also be used with Inflicting Status, Zipper Bear or Andre Cards. Eventually some autocast cards like Mutant Dragonoid Card can be used.
Smasher is probably the best option of forged elemental weapons.
13066.png Eden Group Dagger III
Outclasses Stiletto, Orcish Axe, and other notable weapons unless they highly refined, properly carded, and/or forged. (ATK 165, MATK 80)
13092.png RWC Memory Knife [1]
Can achieve higher damage output than Eden Group Dagger III and most Super Novice weapons with set bonuses and appropriate card. (ATK 50. ATK & MATK +20 for every 3 refine levels. All Damage +5% if refine level is +6~8, +10% if refine level is +9 or higher. May autocast Weapon Perfection Lv. 1 when attacking)
510071.png Awakened Blessed Knife [2]
Allows use of Fatal Menace at +7 and Increases damage of Back Stab and Fatal Menace
28717.png Valkyrie Knife [4]
Gives the most bonuses to Novices allowing them to reach maximum ASPD and high CRIT chance at high refines.
1148.png Star Dust Blade [1]
Can achieve higher damage output than Eden Group Dagger III if properly carded and enchanted with Malangdo Enchants. Can be a great alternative to Platinum Shotel with two Sharp 5 enchants. (ATK 145. May cause Stun at 5% chance)
13404.png Platinum Shotel [1]
Requires Super Novice Spirit to be used, weapon for critical attacks, when used combined with Fury can reach 100 critical rate. (ATK 130, CRIT +50)
1543.png Brave Battlefield Morning Star
1542.png Valorous Battlefield Morning Star
1546.png Glorious Morning Star
Superior PvP and WoE weapons obtainable from Battlegrounds. Glorious Morning Star is slightly better. Due the refinement bonuses, Glorious can reach the highest DPS of all Super Novice melee weapons in almost any situation (PvM, MVP, PVP and WoE).
1622.png Hypnotist's Staff [2]
Can be used with Fabre (VIT +1, Max HP +100), Drops (DEX +1, HIT +3), Necromancer (INT +1, MDEF Piercing +2%), Centipede Larva (INT +1, MATK +3), Death Word (+5% damage inflicted with Napalm Beat and Soul Strike) or Hill Wind (+5% damage inflicted with Thunderstorm) cards.
550081.png Awakened Freedom Stick [2]
Allows use of Psychic Wave and Increases Earth and Neutral magical damage.
1637.png Eraser
1641.png Glorious Cure Wand
1636.png Thorn Staff of Darkness
2000.png Staff of Destruction [1]
These staves require Super Novice Spirit to be used, some are Two-handed Staves, they can be used in different situations (eg Heal, recover SP, attack), mostly of these have higher damage than Hypnotist's Staff and have some exclusive bonuses.

Due the refinement bonuses, Thorn Staff of Darkness (combo with Skull Cap) can reach the highest DPS of all Super Novice's magical weapons in almost any situation.
